MultiMac NIC Drivers

Wikis > MultiMac NIC Drivers

MultiMac is a development project for producing NIC drivers. It provides a framework which simplifies driver development and also provides a system library which makes porting FreeBSD drivers simple and easy. A couple of the MultiMac drivers were developed for OS/2, however the vast majority are ported.  Ported drivers were originally developed to run on another system, so how well they work on OS/2 can vary. We have found that Realtek hardware (supported by MMRE) and Intel hardware (supported by E1000B) generally work well, while Broadcom hardware and Atheros hardware can be problematic. This may help you with hardware selection when buying a new system. Please see the Debugging Guide for more information.

The MultiMac drivers are distributed from time to time in a WarpIn package that contains all the drivers. The file name of each distribution contains a date so you know when the package was released. Note that each individual driver inside the package has its own version number that is not related to the date of the distribution package. Do not confuse the date of the distribution package with the version number of each of the drivers inside the distribution package.

This page lists the various MultiMac NIC drivers that are currently available, along with the list of hardware they are supposed to support.

The currently available MultiMac NIC drivers are:

    • NVETH – NVIDIA PCIe LAN adapters
    • E1000B – Intel(R) PRO/1000 LAN adapters
    • MMAE – Attansic Technology Corp. L2 FastEthernet LAN adapters

    • R8169 – Realtek Gigabit PCIe LAN adapters – unsupported. Use MMRE instead.

These drivers exist and are included in the MultiMac distribution because someone needed them and requested a driver.  MultiMac drivers are no longer easy to create. If you have a specific network adapter that is not supported by an existing MultiMac driver and you need a driver for it, please open a ticket and request a new driver. Make sure you attach a TestLog log file to your ticket.
